How much memory does BA use?

Postby olisav » Sat Sep 03, 2011 9:36 am

Good morning,

Recently my computer has been running a bit slower, so I looked in task manager to see what was using up the memory. Currently BA is using 1,462,812k, I just wondered if this was the norm?

Cheers,

Oli

Between 100 and 150mb is normal. The .Net framework takes up a big chunk to start with. I don't think this is excessive for modern PCs.

A program written in C++ for example will have a considerably smaller footprint, but you lose all the advantages of .Net and development time is considerably longer.

Hi Gary,

Thanks for your response, so is my computer using about 10 times as much as the normal expected amount?

Cheers,

Oli

Sorry, just realised. Yes it is. How many markets are open and how long has it been running before you noticed this?

I have 6-8 markets, i did a restart yesterday. I spoke to my friend, he has 2 markets open and it is running at about half what mine is, which is about 700mb.

I will run a memory profiler on it. I wasn't aware there were any memory leaks, but this sounds like there could be. I'll get back to you.

Also can you tell me what it is when you first open it and can you see the memory usage increasing as you watch or does it appear too gradual to see?

Can I have a bit more information on what features you are using?
Are you using Excel triggered betting and which trigger modifiers are you using? (eg. tick offset/fill or kill)

Hi Gary,

I am linking to a spreadsheet that backs, lays and cancel (cancel-all very occasionally) (excel triggered betting). I am not using any other triggers on these sheets at the moment.

Let me know if you need anymore info and I will reply as quick as possible.

Cheers,

Oli

It appears that a recent change I made to the chart options dialog has had a knock on effect causing chart history to be retained in memory after changing markets. This is a memory leak. It doesn't matter if you don't use this dialog, the problem will still occur.

For example you have been monitoring market A for 2 hours and then change to market B. After monitoring market B for a further 2 hours you should only have 2 hours worth of prices in memory but there are 4 (2 from the previous market). This means memory consumption will just increase the longer you use the program.

I will release a fix tomorrow.

Sports betting software from Gruss Software

The strength of Gruss Software is that it’s been designed by one of you, a frustrated sports punter, and then developed by listening to dozens of like-minded enthusiasts.

Gruss is owned and run by brothers Gary and Mark Russell. Gary discovered Betfair in 2004 and soon realised that using bespoke software to place bets was much more efficient than merely placing them through the website.

Gary built his own software and then enhanced its features after trialling it through other Betfair users and reacting to their improvement ideas, something that still happens today.

He started making a small monthly charge so he could work on it full-time and then recruited Mark to help develop the products and Gruss Software was born.

We think it’s the best of its kind and so do a lot of our customers. But you can never stand still in this game and we’ll continue to improve the software if any more great ideas emerge.
