New technical analysis package

Postby doris_day » Sat Dec 12, 2009 7:07 pm

I know there are a number of traders out there that are keen to try technical analysis on Betfair markets. Whilst I'm yet to be convinced that TA works I think trying the concept out on Betfair markets is the only way to prove it one way or another. Some may find it useful.

One of the problems has been to get the relevant data linked with a proper analysis package but it seems that some guys over at QuantSports have done just that.

They have produced an app that will patch Betfair data into Ninja Trader so you can use all the indicators available for that. I've used Ninja for my financial analysis and its a pretty sophisticated package which will allow you to use either the built in indicators or ones that you create yourself as custom ones.

Ninja is available as a free package so the only cost will be for QS. Its not available yet because it needs to pass the Betfair API security stuff but I gather it should be soon.

I have no affilliation with QS before you ask but felt there would be some on this forum that would be interested in the app.

PS You'll still need Gruss to place the bets and I'm sure the possibility of linking them all together would be an interesting concept. The Betfair version of TradeStation eh ?

doris,

Is the analysis done in real time, ie, on live Betfair markets or is it done using historic data from closed markets ?

If it is linked to historic data, do you know if QuantSports are linking to the FracSoft time stamped Betfair data or the free data provided by Betfair themselves ?

The free Betfair data needs a reasonable amount of data cleansing before it can be used for analysis but I am not sure of the quality of the FracSoft data.

Doris,

I should have read the QuantSports blurb first, however, to answer my own question, it seems as though they are connecting to live events in the Betfair API then passing this info to NinjaTrader via an external data feed.

Interesting stuff no doubt, and reasonably priced at their quoted £8 per month. It offers the possibility to alleviate the pain of cleansing historic data and analysing it with data mining tools etc.

Hi Doris,

Was searching the forum this morning to see if anyone knew anything about http://www.knighttrader.co.uk/index.html and came across your post.

The Quantsports app is now free and I have signed up to give it a try. So many thanks for that link.

Ray,

It works very well but the use of TA in these markets is questionable. In fact the use of TA in any markets is questionable imo. I have spent years trying almost everything TA has to offer and I've never been able to make a profit from it. Pairs trading has worked for me and I suppose thats a sort of TA but nothing else comes remotely close to being profitable. Mind you I could have something to do with that too :)

As far as Knightrader is concerned this seems to be nothing more than a pretty simple over-round/under-round routine which almost anyone who uses Gruss daily could build in Excel.

You have to ask yourself why this guy is renting it out rather than using it himself. If it could make the returns he suggests then all he needs to do is use it with higher stakes himself.

Its never a good sign when anyone shows cherry picked videos either.

But no doubt there will be those who see the propect of money for nothing as attractive. But it usually ends up as nothing for nothing.....

I once came across an interesting article where hundreds of technical
strategies with different parameters were evaluated long term. A few of
them were indeed profitable. Guess which strategy was the best: The simple
"Buy & Hold" that buys the stock and never sells it. Compared to all other
strategies it saves a fortune in transaction costs.

Thanks to Doris for your usual informative and incisive comments and to Milfor for his input.

I guess I have to experience TA for myself and until I find out otherwise I will continue to experiment as in my ignorance I really believe that TA has something to offer - despite being disappointed by your (Doris) lack of succes I will persevere with Quantum Sports and Ninja Trader as they offer all the tools I was looking for.

I am now on a steep learning curve but will report back here when I have a little more insight into using these tools. Right now I am playing with them at Kempton and am struggling - lol

Also thanks for the comments re Knighttrader

Regards to all

Sports betting software from Gruss Software

The strength of Gruss Software is that it’s been designed by one of you, a frustrated sports punter, and then developed by listening to dozens of like-minded enthusiasts.

Gruss is owned and run by brothers Gary and Mark Russell. Gary discovered Betfair in 2004 and soon realised that using bespoke software to place bets was much more efficient than merely placing them through the website.

Gary built his own software and then enhanced its features after trialling it through other Betfair users and reacting to their improvement ideas, something that still happens today.

He started making a small monthly charge so he could work on it full-time and then recruited Mark to help develop the products and Gruss Software was born.

We think it’s the best of its kind and so do a lot of our customers. But you can never stand still in this game and we’ll continue to improve the software if any more great ideas emerge.
