CPU Useage

Postby Hovrin » Fri Mar 26, 2010 11:27 pm

Hi,

Can anybody tell me what level of cpu useage I should be experiencing?

I am running BA on a reasonably powerful dual processor desktop, (Intel 6750 processor, 2 Gb ram, Windows XP, etc), and with no other programs running.

With BA freshly installed and started and not set up to do anything at all except refresh at 20 seconds, (thats default as well), I am getting 45 - 55% cpu usage reported by Windows Task manager- just for BA.

That seems exessive to me but is it normal?

Any comments would be appreciated.

TIA

Doesn't seem right as BA hardly takes up any resources. On my XP setup with an old Dell CPU is approx 2-5% on a newer Windows 7 it doesn't even register at 0%

There could be many reasons for bad performance.. does talk of a fresh install scare you...? :)

We have a made a lot of effort to make BA as CPU efficient as possible. It's one of it's best features so I am very surprised this is an issue for you. It's not clear what your refresh rate is. 20 seconds is not the default, it's 1 second.

You also appear to be using an older version ( 1.1.0.58 ). Try uninstalling and upgrading to the latest version ( 1.1.0.65g ) using the link below.

Hi,

Thanks for replying so quickly.

I have been using 1.1.0.58 for some time as I don't need the newer features and basically couldn't see a reason to upgrade. However I started to notice a few occasions when the PC would seem to hang for a few seconds. It was then that I found this high CPU usage so I decided to upgrade to 1.1.0.65g. That made no difference so I reverted to 1.1.0.58 just to make sure that I hadn't been mistaken.

I have altered the refresh rate to 20 seconds because I set my system up early morning and leave it all day until the horse racing starts. I only need to update 2 or 3 spreadsheets at 4 minutes before the off for each race so it seems a waste of bandwidth to refresh every second. Am I OK to do this?

Talk of a fresh install does not bother me, in fact I have been considering a complete rebuild using Windows 7 once I have made sure I have all the relevent drivers to hand.

From your comments it would seem that it is my system which is at fault and maybe the rebuild is the best course of action, or do you have any other ideas?

Thanks

Refreshing every 20 seconds is ok and should hardly use your CPU at all.

Before going for a complete rebuild you could try a fresh install of the .Net framework in case that is at fault.

1) Use the cleanup tool here http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/pages/8904493.aspx to remove version 2 of the framework

2) Re-install using the following link.

Hi,

Gary - you are a magician!

Just set up my system for today and suddenly my cpu is down to 2%. How did you do it? I haven't changed anything! I wish I had your skills!!

Seriously though, everything is fine now, there must have been a glitch last night. I'm sorry I bothered you but thanks for your replies.

Thanks also to osnows.

Sports betting software from Gruss Software

The strength of Gruss Software is that it’s been designed by one of you, a frustrated sports punter, and then developed by listening to dozens of like-minded enthusiasts.

Gruss is owned and run by brothers Gary and Mark Russell. Gary discovered Betfair in 2004 and soon realised that using bespoke software to place bets was much more efficient than merely placing them through the website.

Gary built his own software and then enhanced its features after trialling it through other Betfair users and reacting to their improvement ideas, something that still happens today.

He started making a small monthly charge so he could work on it full-time and then recruited Mark to help develop the products and Gruss Software was born.

We think it’s the best of its kind and so do a lot of our customers. But you can never stand still in this game and we’ll continue to improve the software if any more great ideas emerge.
