Betfair maintenance

Postby Craig » Sat Nov 21, 2009 9:43 pm

Hi,

I note from the announcements that there will be Betfair maintenance on Monday morning.

I've only recently started using triggered betting, so far without any technical hitches (touchwood).

Each morning before leaving for work, I load up the first race of the day from the quick pick list, and set auto-select to 'Wait until actual off of preceeding race. I do this at about 05:30am.

If I do that on Monday morning, clearly the connection with the Betfair server will be interrupted during the period of the maintenance.

My question is, once the server maintenace has been completed, will Betting Assistant happily reload the first race of the day and carry on as if nothing had happened, or will Monday be a no-go day for me?

I'm not concerned about missing any bets during the maintenance period, as my settings only trigger bets within ten minutes of the off.

Advice from more experienced users will be much appreciated.

I think it probably won't work. I think the API will drop the session token. It's not programmed to login again. I will look into this on Monday to see if it can be catered for.

Hi Gary / Craig

I know in the past if I setup all my automated betting in BA linked to excel before the maintenance period usually it will continue to work after Betfair being down for a few hours.

Basically the spreadsheets before the maintenance period will log depending on your refresh rate, when Betfair shuts down logging stops at that point but starts back again when Betfair is back online.

Perhaps some other users can verify this, but I will be doing this on Mon before 6:15am and taking a chance it continues to work.

Cheers

Gary and Castillo,

Thanks for your advice. On Monday morning I'll just set up BA as usual, and see what — if anything — happens.

Mak,

Thanks for the url to LogMeIn. I hadn't come across this service before — it looks potentially very useful for a number of purposes.

Thanks and regards

As per my earlier post, this morning at 05:30 I loaded the first race of the day from the quick pick list, turned on auto-select, and hoped for the best.

I've just got back home, and the transaction log shows a full day's business — BA worked perfectly.

Was the Betfair server down for maintenance this morning, as planned? If so, BA coped with it fine.

However, Merlmagic wasn't so lucky — perhaps it's something of a hit-and-miss affair?

What are other users' experiences during Betfair maintenance, both today and previously?

BA has always worked fine for me through maintenance periods, presumably they save the session tokens before beginning.

merlmagic: It would be helpful if you could provide more information about the crash. Did the program stop responding or was a message displayed saying the program had to shut down? If the program had to shut down then you can send us the error logs. See http://gruss-software.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3085

I setup BA & Excel just before 6am, at about 6:16am Betfair went down for maintenance, both BA & Excel stopped logging. It would seem that BA has crashed, if you try to refresh account balance it would just show updating etc.

When I returned later in the evening BA & Excel had resumed logging and were performing as usual.

I can confirm that when the maintenance was happening BA could not contact Betfair, but once it was completed it was business as usual and I did not need to update anything or reconnect manually.

Sports betting software from Gruss Software

The strength of Gruss Software is that it’s been designed by one of you, a frustrated sports punter, and then developed by listening to dozens of like-minded enthusiasts.

Gruss is owned and run by brothers Gary and Mark Russell. Gary discovered Betfair in 2004 and soon realised that using bespoke software to place bets was much more efficient than merely placing them through the website.

Gary built his own software and then enhanced its features after trialling it through other Betfair users and reacting to their improvement ideas, something that still happens today.

He started making a small monthly charge so he could work on it full-time and then recruited Mark to help develop the products and Gruss Software was born.

We think it’s the best of its kind and so do a lot of our customers. But you can never stand still in this game and we’ll continue to improve the software if any more great ideas emerge.
