Place SP

Postby Daywalker » Tue Dec 06, 2011 12:02 am

Hi

I've been reviewing a test sheet and realised a high number of my selections are getting placed so I checked the place price on timeform results.
Does anyone know if these Place SP's are better/worse/roughly same as available price at scheduled off?

Thanks

In theory your p/l -long run- should be the same

I understand that if they are roughly the same, sometimes a little higher, sometimes less, then in the long run that would be about the same.

However I dont know how Betfair calculate the SP. I thought it was partly to do with the amounts layed and backed at SP, as this money is used to payout to SP winners. I just assumed that more would be backed at SP than layed at SP and that would make the SP different to what was available on the exchange pre-off.

This has made me wonder when does Betfair calculate SP? At scheduled off? Actual off? 1 furlong and a mole hill into the race? Or after the finish? :?

Any ideas?

Basically it's calculated by matching any lay BSP bets against the Backed BSP bets, if there's an inbalance with the' amounts it'll then start taking money from the exchange bets, including x matching, to reconcile an SP closest to within the spread at suspension and reconciled before the in play market starts.

The problem with the place market side of things is that it's usually a very weak market for BSP with few bets in there of any real value, if you're playing in larger amounts any money you stick in will probably affect the price against you. For £10's and £20's won't be any problem but higher than that at larger prices you'd probably be best to take a price if possible.

If you note down the overrounds you'll actually find they're very close to a 100% market and mainly underound rather than overround because betfair use the x matching to try and force a market that looks more attractive to backers at first glance but this will usually be in favour of outsiders as you'd expect.

Sports betting software from Gruss Software

The strength of Gruss Software is that it’s been designed by one of you, a frustrated sports punter, and then developed by listening to dozens of like-minded enthusiasts.

Gruss is owned and run by brothers Gary and Mark Russell. Gary discovered Betfair in 2004 and soon realised that using bespoke software to place bets was much more efficient than merely placing them through the website.

Gary built his own software and then enhanced its features after trialling it through other Betfair users and reacting to their improvement ideas, something that still happens today.

He started making a small monthly charge so he could work on it full-time and then recruited Mark to help develop the products and Gruss Software was born.

We think it’s the best of its kind and so do a lot of our customers. But you can never stand still in this game and we’ll continue to improve the software if any more great ideas emerge.
