"Sticky" API

Postby ddaann » Tue May 04, 2010 6:47 pm

Does anyone else have problems with IR horse markets. Basically they appear to me for the past few weeks as on very busy Saturday (with lot of races and football at the same time). As I result I get matched much less than before. Also, some crazy odds swings (I can't recall seeing anything like that for the past 2 years), but that could be something to do with new breed of "on course" IR traders. Any comments on this?

This is an area which I spend a lot of time analysing simply because I run automated algos which require a fast refresh time and an efficient bet matching engine.

First off, if you're based outside of the UK then your bets will be sent via the Malta servers and this will increase the delay in being matched.
Secondly, Saturdays are often poor because of the extra volume of traffic, particularly when there are a number of live soccer matches.
Thirdly, there has been a falloff of in-running liquidity which means volatility will inevitably rise.

That said, I've found that over the past few weeks the Betfair server system has generally been performing really well, even during Saturdays. Just before the flat season started the performance improved whereas before that the performance was quite patchy.

I've found there have been brief moments when things have been poor but I have noticed they've usually been ISP related as it would seem Betfair have had a few issues with Virgin, who is one of my ISPs.

I am in the UK, what I meant was that every day was like a busy Satuday.
Maybe it was something to do with ISP, I'm with Be.

I'd certainly take a look at your ISP then as the last couple of weeks have been good, other than the odd off moment.

Try speedtest.net (I find the Dublin and/or Paris servers give the most accurate results btw)

Sports betting software from Gruss Software

The strength of Gruss Software is that it’s been designed by one of you, a frustrated sports punter, and then developed by listening to dozens of like-minded enthusiasts.

Gruss is owned and run by brothers Gary and Mark Russell. Gary discovered Betfair in 2004 and soon realised that using bespoke software to place bets was much more efficient than merely placing them through the website.

Gary built his own software and then enhanced its features after trialling it through other Betfair users and reacting to their improvement ideas, something that still happens today.

He started making a small monthly charge so he could work on it full-time and then recruited Mark to help develop the products and Gruss Software was born.

We think it’s the best of its kind and so do a lot of our customers. But you can never stand still in this game and we’ll continue to improve the software if any more great ideas emerge.
