Dedicated Server vs Home PC

Postby coco999 » Fri Oct 30, 2009 1:29 pm

Hi
Need some feedback on 2 solutions to a problem:
Whilst I am at work I currently leave my home computer running with BA/excel triggers. Would like to connect from work to check progress, and also longer term whilst on holiday keep the system running.

I thought about using gotomypc.co.uk but also noticed the dedicated/virtual hosts posts.

What is the best solution for effieciency? will i see any performance improvement from the dedicated solution? also a lot of my bets are in-running and miss matching the odds required - would a dedicated host with better internet make a difference?

Would be great for feedback from people using either method

regards
Andy

There will be some speed advantage, at home my latency averages 30ms whereas on tagadab I get 0ms-16ms. Now whether that's significant I'm not so sure. If your home latency was much more than that'd be something else.

You could just be missing bets due to the nature of the in-running markets.

Also I recommend logmein.com for remote access, it's free and easy to use.

Thanks Joe

Out of interest what is latency and how do i find it out?
Would you recommend tagadab or home pc? what are your uses for 1/ both?

Considering a tagadab trial. option 2 i think. What do you subscribe to?

The latency figure appears next to the "Actual refresh" figure in brackets on the top line of BA.

I set up on a server as I was having internet issues at home and occassional power cuts. Having it on a different machine means I don't accidentally touch it when using my pc, and having it off-site in a data center makes it more reliable.

Ultimately it's down to your need. I first bought a second hand pc off ebay for fifty quid to host BA, if it wasn't for the other issues I was having I'd probably still be using that, though now it's on a server it does give a certain peace of mind.

I have two dedicated servers with Rapid Switch, in my experience it makes quite a considerable difference. Latency is much less (0-13) and the machines are fully dedicated. I opted for Rapid Switch because it was good value and there is no contract, so far they have been very reliable except for one outage (not during racing thankfully).

I also use automated betting in running and have the same need to get the bets in as quickly as possible. The difference is probably only .05 of a seccond so you couldn't say for any one bet whether that made the difference or not but it does seem that overall my servers get more bets matched than my home PC does.

I use remote desktop to interface with the servers which works very well.

I have used Tagadab in the past but at nearly £25 per month i find it a little to expensive. Can the following link be used for running BA or is it just for hosting a web page? :?

From what I can see this is a Linux based OS so you can't run BA on it. So I don't think it's gonna do what you need it too.

Personally, I just use my home PC but have a seperate profile for all BA functions and then just switch profile to my normal one when I need to use my PC. It works great for me.

Separate profiles is not a bad idea. I've recently been exploring using virtualised pc's in vmware. That has certain advantages, such as being able to easily backup whole (virtual) machines, moving them between physical PCs, having multiple OSs on fewer machines.

Most important and advantageous thing is speed. But at some stage, it will slow and then after it will work fast. So the overall performance is very effective and flexible. Ease to use and quick response.

Sports betting software from Gruss Software

The strength of Gruss Software is that it’s been designed by one of you, a frustrated sports punter, and then developed by listening to dozens of like-minded enthusiasts.

Gruss is owned and run by brothers Gary and Mark Russell. Gary discovered Betfair in 2004 and soon realised that using bespoke software to place bets was much more efficient than merely placing them through the website.

Gary built his own software and then enhanced its features after trialling it through other Betfair users and reacting to their improvement ideas, something that still happens today.

He started making a small monthly charge so he could work on it full-time and then recruited Mark to help develop the products and Gruss Software was born.

We think it’s the best of its kind and so do a lot of our customers. But you can never stand still in this game and we’ll continue to improve the software if any more great ideas emerge.
